The Rise of Tiktok

TikTok: Here's How to Share a Video Outside of the App – Adweek

Recently, a new social media platform has gained popularity: Tiktok. This app was originally known as Musical.ly and was bought by a Chinese company called, ByteDance, in November of 2017 for 1 billion dollars. In 2019 the app gained a larger audience and keeps growing to this day.

Tiktok is a social media platform to share videos with more than 1.5 billion downloads as of January 2020. Content on the app ranges from animal videos, to dance videos, to comedy videos. A major reason the app is so popular is that anyone has the chance to go viral. On your feed, you have two tabs. The people you follow and the For You Page which consists of videos that you would most likely be interested in.

Along with the rise of Tiktok, there is some controversy surrounding the app. The US government questioned whether Tiktok could be a threat to national security and also the app has gotten in trouble with children's privacy officials. According to Business Insider, "TikTok paid out a $5.7 million fine to the Federal Trade Commission in 2019 over allegations it illegally collected personal information from children under age 13 without parental consent, in violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. In another COPPA-related lawsuit, Tiktok settled for 1.1 million." Tiktok has also been accused of censoring content that would be considered "culturally problematic." Examples of content would include videos with vaping and social issues.

Although Tiktok is one of the most popular video-sharing platforms right now, there had been a lot of controversies that have come with the rise of the app.
